The Enugu State Ministry of Education says it has received some disturbing reports that some private and mission Schools in the state are charging students/parents outrageous WAEC and NECO fees.
This was contained in a statement by the ministry and made available to newsmen in Enugu.
In the statement, the ministry warned that any attempt by any private, mission or public school that charges outrageous West African Examinations Council, WAEC; and National Examinations Council, NECO; fees would face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, who deplored the alleged of extortion, stated that there would be dire consequences against any school proprietor that charges parents/guardians above government stipulated fees for such examinations.
He said that punishment that awaits individuals or institutions that would go contrary to the stipulated fees could be legal prosecution, dismissal from service, and revocation of provisional approval and or license for the violating school.
According to the ministry, the approved WAEC fees for May/June 2025 WAEC is N28,000 (N27,000 to WAEC + N1,000 processing fee).
“The approved NECO fees for 2025 is N30,000 (N27,000 +N500 + N2,500) payable directly to NECO,” the statement said.
It said that the ministry had concluded the 2025 WAEC registration for about 40,000 candidates, adding that registration for NECO has commenced advising schools/candidates to pay directly to NECO.
“Parents in Enugu State are hereby strongly encouraged to report to the Ministry of Education, any incident of extortion in the guise of fees collection for WAEC and NECO.
“Proprietors and principals of schools in Enugu State are hereby warned that any confirmed incident of extortion in the guise of fees collection for WAEC and NECO will result in severe penalties.
“These include, legal prosecution, dismissal from service, and revocation of provisional approval and or license for the violating school,” it said.
