In an effort to protect the residents of Imo State from infectious and zoonotic diseases, the state government through the Ministry of Livestock Development, has deployed a team of Veterinary Doctors to carry out a state-wide free Anthrax vaccination across the 27 local government areas of Imo State.
This initiative is made possible through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Project (L-PRES) in collaboration with the Imo State Government.
The vaccination exercise which commenced last week is expected to reach the most remote villages and rural communities in the state for comprehensive coverage and protection of livestock.
This vaccination programme followed a flag-off ceremony held in the state on September 19, 2023, by the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Hon. Dr. Anthony C. Mgbeahuruike, with full sponsorship and support from Governor Hope Uzodinma.
Anthrax vaccination is a vital annual exercise required to protect both animals and humans from the deadly zoonotic disease, anthrax.
This infection poses a significant health risk due to its ability to affect both humans and animals, with high morbidity and mortality rates.
This year’s vaccination programme which is being coordinated by L-PRES and Imo government will act as a booster dose to the first vaccination and this will enhance the immunity of the previously vaccinated animals. Imo people and animal herders across the state are being encouraged to make their livestock available for this all important exercise.
