The Imo State House of Assembly, has raised an alarm over the growing threat of climate change which is contributing to flooding and extreme weather conditions in the state.
They, therefore, called on residents to clean their environments and prevent the obstruction of waterways and canals, particularly in flood-prone areas.
A motion, sponsored by Kingsley Ozurumba, the representative of Isu constituency, and co-sponsored by 15 other legislators, emphasized the need for collaboration between the state government, environmental agencies, and the public to avoid the menace.
Ozurumba, while presenting the motion, underscored that Imo State, like many parts of the world, has been significantly impacted with flooding in the past, causing loss of lives and property.
He acknowledged the state government’s efforts to mitigate flooding, including the provision of balloon technology, waste evacuation trucks, and other equipment.
However, Ozurumba expressed concerns that these measures would be ineffective unless residents, particularly in flood-prone areas, practice better waste disposal and clear waterways, channels, and canals.
“What we are saying in this motion is that people need to collaborate with the government to prevent flooding during the rainy season,” Ozurumba stated.
“We urge people to clear their gutters, waterways, and any canals to ensure the free flow of rainwater. By doing this, we can prevent flooding, even in the face of excessive rainfall caused by climate change.”
