The Imo State Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Professor Bernard Ikegwuoha, has announced an immediate ban on physical punishment in schools, including flogging, slapping, or kneeling of students, noting that discipline must be enforced through wisdom, not violence.
Professor Ikegwuoha made this announcement during the 2025 Training Workshop for Public Secondary School Principals, organized by the Imo State Secondary Education Management Board (SEMB) in Owerri.
Prof. Ikegwuoha called on school principals to rise to their responsibilities or risk being demoted.
“This administration is focused on education, economy, and infrastructure,” he said.
Referencing Governor Hope Uzodimma’s strategic agenda, Prof Ikegwuoha said “Imo is leading in WAEC and NECO results and has the highest number of professors in the country. That legacy must not be reversed.”
He charged principals to uphold discipline, maintain clean school environments, show up for work punctually, and treat every student like their own child.
