The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old man, Nnamdi Anyaji, for allegedly killing his 68-year-old mother, Mrs. Dorathy Anyaji, in Ekwulobia, Anambra State.
The suspect reportedly accused his mother of dishonesty regarding the proceeds from a cassava business, which led to a fatal altercation.
Ikengaonline learned that after killing his mother, Anyaji attempted to take his own life but was apprehended by police operatives.
A statement released by the Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO) of the Anambra Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said police recovered an axe at the scene, believed to be the instrument used in the crime.
“Police Operatives attached to the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station on 11th April 2025 by 1.40pm arrested one Nnamdi Anyaji ‘M’ aged 49 years of Amudo Village, Ekwulobia who attempted to take his own life after killing his mother Mrs Dorathy Anyaji of the same address aged 68 years. The Operatives also recovered one Axe at the scene.
“Preliminary information reveals that the squabble started when the suspect accused the deceased of being dishonest about the money realised from a cassava business.
“Meanwhile, the suspect is in custody and under close monitoring so as not to commit suicide and would be charged to court after the investigation,” Ikenga said.
In a separate operation, the police raided a drug den in Umuokpala Village, Orumba North Local Government Area, arresting 12 suspects aged between 20 and 29 years.
Ikenga said the suspects were found with dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and other illicit substances. He also said they have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.
He said those arrested are: Ifeanyi Bernard, Emmanuel Ugwu, Thankgod Kelechi, Umeh Chidera, Aguiyi Onyeka, Onyeka Martin, Festus Ihezie, and Chibundu Nicholas.
Also listed are Solomon Obiefule, Chibundu Daniel, Neke Shedrack and Nwazufu Kingsley all males and within the age bracket of 20-29 years.
Ikenga said the suspects have been handed over to Operatives of Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for necessary action.
