Security operatives in Anambra State have arrested six individuals accused of hiring terminally ill persons to beg for alms in Oba, a community in the state.
The raid was carried out Wednesday by a team of operatives from the Oba Divisional Police Headquarters, and Anambra Vigilante Operatives.
The suspects, identified as Doris Basil aged 28, Peter Ezedike, 38, Susan Monday, 27, Ogechi Okoro, 27, Solomon Sunday, 29, and Kenneth Achi, 29, were apprehended for allegedly exploiting vulnerable individuals suffering from severe illnesses, including brain tumors and breast cancer, to solicit money from the public.
During the operation, security forces recovered six mobile phones and ₦82,400 in cash, consisting of ₦50, ₦100, and ₦200 notes. Also, four sick individuals were rescued and provided with first aid, with arrangements underway for further medical treatment and their safe return home.
However, Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has condemned the suspects’ actions, describing them as a stark reflection of societal moral decline.
He highlighted that their actions violate Section 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, which addresses obtaining property by false pretense, commonly known as “419 fraud.”
The Force Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said CP Orutugu has ordered the immediate interrogation of the sick individuals’ relatives to determine their involvement and directed that the suspects be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling such exploitative crimes and ensuring justice is served.
