The Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, has launched an appeal to the public and legal practitioners to reduce the number of petitions filed against judicial officers.
Speaking at the 27th Law Week in Awka, the state capital, Justice Anyachebelu urged Nigerians to pursue legal avenues in seeking justice.
He emphasized the importance of obeying court orders, stressing that this is crucial for maintaining order and preventing societal anarchy.
The judge appealed for a reduction in the number of petitions filed against judicial officers particularly the Chief Judges, noting that such petitions can impede the justice delivery system in the society.
Contributing, Attorney General of the State and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje, stressed the importance of government authorities respecting court orders.
Ifemeje, while speaking on event theme: “Disobedience to court orders, impediment to rule of law,” assured that courts, which have been sitting outside their jurisdictions because of threats from non-state actors would return.
Other speakers at the event, including Bona Oraekwe, Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Awka Branch, and Peter Abayomi, Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 13 Ukpo, represented by CSP Innocent Obi, questioned why individuals disobey court orders simply because they have filed an appeal at the Appellate Court.
They emphasized that there are consequences for contempt of court, highlighting the importance of adhering to judicial directives until they are overturned.
Another participant, Amaechi Umebuogo, echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for respect for rule of law in the society.
