Discontent and leadership crisis is brewing in Abba community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State following the alleged continued stay of Mr Alexander Ekwuagana as Caretaker President General of the community.
Members of the community continue to complain about the leadership that, they said, has not solved its pressing needs.
It was gathered that Amabor, one of the villages in Abba, is asserting its turn to produce the President General of the Abba Town Union.
However, the village has been unable to do so because “stakeholders” have reportedly preferred Mr. Ekwuagana from another village to remain as Caretaker PG since 2020.
In a letter dated 14th May 2025, titled “DEMAND FOR ADHERENCE TO THE TOWN UNION CONSTITUTION AND IMMEDIATE CALL FOR ELECTION,” and signed by the Chairman and Secretary of Amabor Welfare Union, Ikechukwu Udedibia and Arinze Okafocha respectively, the village noted that since 2020, they had been denied their rightful turn to produce the President General of the community, describing it as clear constitutional breach and an affront to the rule of law.
The letter addressed to the President General of Abba Town Union was copied to Igwe Abba, Igwe-In-Council, Ire Solidarity Union, Okpulorji Village Assembly, Ezi-Abba Welfare Union, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Deputy Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, and Mayor of Njikoka Local Government Area.
The Amabor village, in the letter, gave extra 7-day ultimatum; in addition to14-day given previously, within which the process for legitimate President General election must be initiated.
Failing the 7-day ultimatum, the Amabor village said they will take all necessary and appropriate steps to assert its constitutional rights and preserve it’s rightful place in the affairs of the town.
It would be recalled that in April, Easter Monday precisely, security operatives reportedly foiled a peaceful protest organized by some youths of the community against their President General, and on Easter Wednesday, a bloody clash was averted in the community; as operatives of Operations Udo Ga-Achi tried to stop what looked like a wedding ceremony at Ire village of the community from proceeding on the order of the PG, whom Ire Village leadership is also kicking against his continued stay in power.
A Mitsubishi bus belonging to the Abba Vigilante Group was seen with broken glasses while it was leaving the venue.
When contacted to react to the new development, the Abba President General, Mr Alex Ekwuagana, simply said: “Anyway, whatever it is they are saying, we have a matter in court. So, let us allow the court to determine what is in the court.”
When pressed further about the 7-day ultimatum, he failed to respond and ended the call.
