Uche Onyema, Owerri
Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen on Sunday attacked the people of Amakohia-Ubi in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
An eyewitness from the community disclosed that the armed men numbering about seven entered the community from their farmland close to Agwa in Oguta council area at about 6 pm.
The bandits were said to have harassed farmers in the area before moving close to their residential areas. They were said to have shot sporadically in the air which attracted the vigilante operatives of the community who engaged them in a serious gun battle forcing them to escape into the bush.
Although no death was recorded but an indigene of the area, Ndii Osuigwe, was said to have been hit by a stray bullet from the crossfire between the herders and the community’s vigilante but survived after he was rushed to the hospital.
Another source from the community told our reporter that the incident might have occurred as a result of the resistance of the vigilante on the herders when they attempted to graze on their farmland earlier.
