A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant for the 2023 election in Ebonyi State, Prof Augustine Nwazunku, is dead.
Nwazunku’s death came as a shock to the people of the state who have expressed sadness at his passing.
He was also a former caretaker Chairman of the State chapter of the party.
The governorship candidate of the party in the said election, Ifeanyi Odii, in a statement on Friday, described his death as devastating and a sad one for the state.
He hailed the impact of the late Nwazunku in the party describing him as a man of integrity who stood for the truth even in the face of attacks by anti-democratic forces.
Odii said: “I am devastated by the sad news of the death of Prof. Augustine Alugbala Nwazunku, the former Ebonyi State Caretaker Chairman of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and my personal ally.
“Nwazunku was a patriot, a man of integrity whose word is a bond. He was a confident man who believed in honour and the sanctity of truth.
“In the last few years that our path crossed in the PDP, Prof. Nwazunku stood firm on the path of justice, fair play and progress of our dear Ebonyi State.
“The loss of this great man has created an irreplaceable vacuum in our state, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka where he taught and mentored young Nigerians on the critical need to preserve our natural environment for posterity.
“As a strong leader of our dear party, Prof. Nwazunku, despite the unwarranted humiliation in the hands of anti-democratic forces stood firm in defence of the truth and justice.
“On behalf of the PDP family in Ebonyi State, we condole with the Nwazunku family of Ntezi-Aba, Izzi in Nkalekle-Echara Unuhu Autonomous Community, Ebonyi Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.
Mr Odii assured the family that the party shall stand by them in this time of grief and beyond.
He was survived by a wife, kids and other relatives including, Chukwuma Nwazunku, a former House of Representatives Member and former Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly and many other family members.
