A nursing mother, Onyinyechi Uzor, has demanded justice for her husband, Nnachi Uzor, who was shot dead by suspected political thugs in Ekoli, Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The attack occurred on Wednesday during a renewed outbreak of violence in the community, which has led to multiple deaths and the destruction of property worth millions of naira. The situation prompted an intervention by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru on Friday.
Fighting back tears, Onyinyechi — who is caring for a two-month-old baby — recounted the harrowing moment her husband was killed in front of their four children.
“We were at home, undressing the children who had just returned from school, when armed men stormed in,” she said.
“They got into an argument with my husband. Then one of them ordered another, whom they called Deri, to shoot him. He was killed right in front of us.”
She said their son, shocked by the violence, picked up a stone and cried out, “You’ve killed my father!” but the gunman threatened to shoot the child if he retaliated.
“After that, they left us in tears and confusion,” she added.
Describing her husband as peaceful and law-abiding, Onyinyechi insisted he had no known conflict with anyone in the community.
“My husband was calm, respectful, and never troubled anyone. Why would they kill such a man?” she lamented.
“I am devastated. I don’t know how we’ll survive this. I’m nursing a baby, and my other three children are still very young. The government and security agencies must ensure justice is served.”
Ebonyi State Police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident.
“We have deployed our men to the area, and so far, two persons have been arrested. Investigations are ongoing. As of now, the area is relatively calm,” Ukandu said.
