Peter Obi’s major support group, the Obidient Movement, has debunked reports of an alleged rift between the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and the party’s acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman.
The group made the clarification in a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja by its National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko.
Describing the rumoured discord as a fabrication by mischief-makers, the statement reaffirmed Obi’s loyalty to the Usman-led Labour Party, especially following the Supreme Court’s recent decision that upheld her appeal in the party’s leadership crisis.
“His Excellency, Peter Obi, has consistently affirmed that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party under the leadership of Sen. Nenadi Usman,” the statement read in part.
“He has also clearly stated his support for all candidates who had previously secured the party’s ticket to contest various political positions.
“The rumour that Peter Obi has betrayed Sen. Nenadi Usman is entirely baseless,” the statement added, describing the speculation as a false narrative peddled by opposition elements to cause distraction.
Tanko noted that the speculation emerged after Obi attended the campaign flag-off of the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Anambra, Dr. George Moghalu, last weekend.
He stressed that Sen. Usman and other key stakeholders in the movement were fully aware of and supportive of Obi’s involvement in the event.
“Let’s not forget that Mr. Peter Obi is a man of integrity, known for keeping his word. His decision to support Dr. George Moghalu reflects his consistency and commitment to the party’s ideals,” he said.
“So far, the only people who have publicly commented on this matter are senators, members of the House of Representatives, state assembly members, and myself. This marks a clear shift from the old political order.”
The statement urged the public to disregard the rumours, dismissing them as propaganda aimed at creating unnecessary controversy.
