President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The institution will now be known as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, Tinubu disclosed on Thursday during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session convened in Buhari’s honour.
Presiding over the session, Tinubu paid tribute to Buhari, describing him as a leader “defined by discipline, moral fortitude, and unwavering patriotism.”
“Buhari was not a perfect man—no leader is—but he was a good, decent, and honourable man,” Tinubu said.
He acknowledged that Buhari’s legacy, like all others, would be debated, but emphasized that “the character he brought to public life, the moral force he carried, and the incorruptible standard he represented will not be forgotten.”
“Buhari stood always ramrod—unmoved by the temptation of power, unseduced by applause, and unafraid of the loneliness that sometimes comes to those who do what is right rather than popular,” Tinubu added.
