Former Governor of Anambra State and former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed profound gratitude to Nigerians and well-wishers around the world for the overwhelming birthday wishes he received as he turned 64 on Saturday.
In a heartfelt statement on his X account titled “Thank You All,” Obi acknowledged the outpouring of goodwill, especially from Nigerian youths, members of the Obidient Movement, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, known for their apostolic work among the poor.
However, Obi emphasized that he does not personally celebrate birthdays, reiterating a long-held tradition of using such occasions to champion causes that benefit the less privileged and strengthen public institutions.
“I recall vividly when I turned 50, during my time as Governor. Many institutions and individuals approached me with elaborate plans for the occasion. One institution generously offered to build a house for me in the village. When I asked for the estimated cost, they said it would be ₦120 million. I humbly requested that the funds be redirected to build classrooms in three educational institutions at Agulu, Ekwulobia, and Abatete,” Obi wrote.
He also cited other instances where celebratory gestures were turned into charitable interventions—ranging from 200 desktop computers donated to schools, to buses handed over to institutions, including the Old Rangers Association.
“This has been my consistent approach over the years. On each birthday, I use the opportunity to redirect goodwill towards causes that uplift others,” Obi said.
Marking his 64th birthday in Rome, at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs, Obi said he offered prayers for Nigeria and its citizens, expressing deep concern about the country’s socio-economic condition.
“I must confess that the current state of our nation makes the idea of personal merriment even more difficult to contemplate. The scale of suffering and deprivation among our people weighs heavily on the conscience.”
He once again urged those wishing to celebrate him to instead channel their resources towards supporting the poor, as well as struggling educational and healthcare institutions.
“May we all find strength and grace to keep striving for a more just, compassionate, and equitable society,” Obi concluded.
Obi’s message underscores his reputation for humility, philanthropy, and commitment to national service—values that continue to resonate with many of his supporters and admirers across Nigeria and beyond.
