In a heartwarming show of leadership and compassion, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party Presidential candidate in 2023, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated ₦20 million to the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Calabar, to assist over 400 dental students facing possible expulsion.
The students had been at risk following threats of expulsion and withdrawal issued by the university management due to accreditation challenges. Reports indicate that the university had over-admitted students into the faculty, overwhelming its capacity and leading to non-compliance with accreditation standards.
A major hurdle to the faculty’s accreditation was the lack of essential dental equipment needed for proper training. Mr. Obi’s generous donation is expected to go a long way in bridging that gap and bringing the faculty closer to full accreditation.
The donation comes after a passionate open letter was addressed to Mr. Obi on social media, drawing his attention to the plight of the students by an X user, @OurFavOnlineDoc. In response, Obi not only acknowledged the concern but acted swiftly—demonstrating what many have hailed as exemplary leadership.
“This is leadership—not just in words, but in action,” said the social media user who played a pivotal role in the campaign.
“We are deeply grateful to Mr. Obi for stepping in to support these students when it mattered most.”
The gesture has sparked an outpouring of appreciation online under the trending hashtag #SaveDentalStudentsOfUniCal, with many Nigerians applauding Obi’s consistency in championing the cause of the downtrodden and underserved.
