Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has joined numerous admirers around the world in paying glowing tribute to Professor Christina Chinwe Achebe, wife of literary icon Chinua Achebe, on the occasion of her 90th birthday.
In a heartfelt birthday message, Obi celebrated Professor Achebe not only as the lifelong partner of one of Africa’s greatest writers but also as a towering figure in her own right—an accomplished academic, mentor, and nation builder.
“Dear Professor Achebe, on this joyful occasion of your 90th birthday, I join your family, friends, and admirers across the world in celebrating a life of purpose and distinction,” Obi wrote on Saturday via hisXhandle.
Highlighting her groundbreaking academic journey, Obi praised Professor Achebe’s enduring impact in the field of education—from her early years at Queen’s College, Lagos, to her academic exploits at the University of London, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
“Beyond being the devoted wife of the iconic Chinua Achebe, you have carved your own extraordinary legacy—as an educator, scholar, and mentor,” he said.
Obi noted that Professor Achebe’s authorship of over 60 scholarly works and her leadership in academia had inspired generations and contributed significantly to national development.
“At 90, you are a beacon of grace, wisdom, and integrity. May God bless you with continued strength, peace, and the love of all those whose lives you’ve touched,” he added.
“Happy 90th Birthday, Professor. We celebrate you with pride and gratitude,” Obi posted.
