The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to serving only a single term if elected President in the 2027 general election.
Obi made the declaration in statement titled, “My One-Term, Four-Year Vow Is Sacrosancton,” on Sunday via his X official handle.
The former Anambra State Governor emphasized that his one-term pledge was not a political gimmick but a personal conviction rooted in his desire to lay a solid foundation for national rebirth and sustainable development.
“I have said it before, and I am saying it again: If elected President, I will serve only one term. Four years is enough to begin the process of rebuilding this country and resetting our national priorities,” Obi stated.
He argued that leadership should not be about personal ambition but about service, impact, and legacy. According to him, his mission is to demonstrate that good governance is possible within a short period when driven by integrity, competence, and clear vision.
Obi said Nigeria could no longer afford recycled leadership or prolonged tenure without measurable progress.
“The problem is not in the number of years a President stays in office, but in what is achieved with the time given. What I’m offering Nigerians is measurable governance with verifiable outcomes,” he said.
The former governor also criticized what he described as the culture of tenure elongation and sit-tight leadership, which he said has stunted Nigeria’s democratic and economic growth.
Obi’s one-term promise first gained attention during the 2023 campaign season, where he consistently advocated for performance-based leadership. Since then, he has continued to engage with citizens across the country, urging a shift from ethnic and religious politics to competence and character.
