Anambra State Government has directed the Caretaker President General of Abba Town Union (ATU), Mr. Alexander Ekwuagana, to prepare the necessary groundwork for the conduct of a town union election in December 2025, in strict compliance with the Abba Town Union Constitution (2017).
In a letter dated 20th August 2025, addressed to the President General of Abba Town Union and signed by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr. Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, the state government explained that the ministry is in receipt of a series of petitions and agitations against the election of the Executive Committee of Abba Town Union held on 28th December 2023, which brought in Mr. Alexander Ekwuagana as the President General.
The agitation, the state government explained, is based on disagreement over the affirmation/extension granted to the Ekwuagana-led executive against the constitution, noting that the petitioners stated that the ATU Constitution only provides for one tenure and rotates to the next village.
The letter, copied to Police Zone 13 Ukpo, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, the Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Security, the Traditional Ruler of Abba, the Mayor of Njikoka LGA, among others, further directed Mr. Ekwuagana to comply with the government’s directive and be guided accordingly.
Anambra State Government had in 2024, through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, certified that Mr. Alexander Ekwuagana – President General; Mr. Dan Madu – Vice President General; Mr. Victor Okeke – Secretary; Marcel Onyilo – Assistant Secretary General; Emmanuel Ezeigwe – Financial Secretary; Ibemesi Ikechukwu – Treasurer; and Godwin Ekwealor – PRO, were bona fide executive members of the ATU recognized by the government with effect from 28th December 2023, being the date of the election said to be “free, fair and credible.”
In a letter dated 29th January 2024, the government said that the Ekwuagana-led executive members’ tenure of office is 3 years and will expire on 28th December 2026, a development that further caused discontent within the community.
