The lawmaker representing Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Nkemkanma Kama, has formally resigned from the Labour Party (LP).
In a letter dated July 16, 2025, and addressed to the party’s ward chairman in Amaeze, Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area, Kama said his decision followed “extensive consultations with my immediate family, political associates, and well-wishers.”
A copy of the resignation letter, which surfaced on social media Tuesday, expressed gratitude to the Labour Party for the platform that secured his election into the Green Chamber.
“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Labour Party for the opportunity to contest and win the last general election as a House of Representatives member under its banner,” Kama wrote.
He acknowledged the trust and support of the party leadership and members, noting that they were “instrumental in our journey so far” and that he would “forever cherish these relationships.”
Kama said although progress had been made with the LP in advancing democratic ideals and improving the welfare of his constituents, stepping aside was necessary.
“After careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that this step is necessary for the greater good of our people. My commitment to service, development, and the upliftment of our constituency remains unwavering, and I believe this decision aligns with the best interests of those we serve,” he added.
While he did not immediately disclose his next political move, his exit is already fueling speculations in Ebonyi political circles. Observers believe he is likely to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has consistently wooed him.
Governor Francis Nwifuru had, during a lawmakers’ empowerment programme in Kama’s Amaeze community last December, openly urged him to defect to the APC. The party’s state chairman, Stanley Emegha, and other stakeholders have also repeatedly courted him at public events.
Kama assured his supporters that his passion for service remained firm.
“I sincerely appreciate the support, camaraderie, and shared vision that defined my time in the Labour Party, and I hope that we will continue to work as patriots in pursuit of a better society. I wish the Labour Party continued success in its endeavours,” he concluded.
His defection is expected to deal a major blow to the Labour Party in Ebonyi State, where he is regarded as one of its most prominent elected officials from the South-East.
