The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development (FENRAD-Nigeria), a pro-democracy and good governance advocacy group, has called on residents of Abia State and the entire South-East region to turn out in large numbers for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The group stressed that voter registration remains the bedrock of democratic participation and an essential step in electing accountable leaders during the 2027 general elections.
FENRAD expressed concern over recent INEC data showing that the South-East lags behind other regions in voter registration. Describing the trend as “alarming,” the group urged eligible residents—particularly youths, women, and first-time voters—to seize the opportunity to register, update their information, or transfer their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“It is disheartening that the South-East is lagging behind in voter registration, according to INEC’s own data. We urge all eligible residents to rise to the occasion and register. The power to decide the future lies in the voter’s card,” the group stated.
Beyond mobilizing citizens, FENRAD also called on INEC to step up awareness campaigns across the South-East, especially in rural communities where access to information remains limited. The group recommended a combination of grassroots outreach, media engagement, and collaborations with civil society and community leaders to drive participation.
“INEC must not treat voter education as a routine. The Commission must adopt proactive and innovative approaches to reach the grassroots, including town hall engagements, faith-based platforms, traditional institutions, and social media channels,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to strengthening democracy and civic participation, FENRAD pledged to continue working with stakeholders to promote free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.
