Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has pledged his administration’s support for the football talent hunt initiative being championed by Super Eagles captain, Kenneth Omeruo.
According to a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, Otti gave the assurance on Tuesday, September 16, when he received the Abia-born international footballer in his office at the Government House, Umuahia.
Omeruo, who was accompanied by the General Manager of Rangers International Football Club of Enugu, Barr. Amobi Ezeaku, told the governor he had come to commend him for restoring the dignity of Abians. He also revealed his plans to launch a talent hunt programme in the state to identify and mentor young footballers, with the aim of helping them secure opportunities in top European clubs.
The governor, while welcoming the initiative, directed his team to work with Omeruo to fine-tune the details of the collaboration. He noted that Abia youths are richly endowed in sports, academics, commerce, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
The statement further quoted Omeruo as saying he had been using his social media platforms to share the positive developments from Abia, stressing that he was proud to be from the state.
In his remarks, Rangers GM Amobi Ezeaku praised the quality of leadership emerging across the South-East, expressing delight over the exploits of governors in the region.
The meeting, the statement added, was attended by the Chief Strategy Officer, Mr. Chinenye Mba Uzoukwu; Technical Assistant to the Governor, Mr. Charles Egonye; and the Special Assistant on Youth, Comrade Onyebuchi Chukwu.
