The Senate and House of Representatives Committees of the National Assembly have moved to monitor various ongoing road projects in the South-East in a bid to ascertain their level of completion and the quality of work done by the contractors, with special attention to the Onitsha–Enugu and 9th Mile–Obollo Afor–Oturkpo–Makurdi roads.
The Chairman of the Senate and House of Representatives Joint Committee on Works, Hon. Akinola Alabi, disclosed this when he led other members of the committee on a courtesy visit to the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, in Enugu.
Hon. Alabi said the committee was in the state to carry out its oversight functions on Federal Government projects under the Ministry of Works in the South-East.
He expressed mixed feelings about some of the projects ongoing in the zone.
The committee chairman further extolled Governor Mbah for providing the enabling atmosphere for the contractors handling various Federal Government projects in the Enugu State axis.
Speaking, Mbah described the committee as one of the most important in the National Assembly.
He appealed to the committee to give Enugu State special attention as an administrative hub of the South East.
The governor stated that road infrastructure remains the bedrock of every growing economy.
He commended the Federal Government for its interventions and urged the contractors to increase their pace of work.
He noted that the state government had intervened where there were obstructions in terms of right of way and had paid compensations.
He further asked the committee to intervene in order to fast-track the Onitsha–Enugu and 9th Mile–Obollo–Oturkpo–Makurdi Expressways and other interventions.
