The Police in Ebonyi State have arrested three suspects in connection with a shooting incident that disrupted the Students’ Union Government (SUG) election at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.
The incident occurred on Monday at the College of Agricultural Science (CAS) campus during the announcement of election results when gunshots were allegedly fired to disperse students who had gathered.
One of the bullets struck a student, who was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for urgent medical attention.
Police spokesperson in the state, Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Tuesday.
He identified the suspects as Lawrence Azubuike, Ibe Kenneth, and Njoku Joshua, adding that a locally made pistol used in the act was recovered from them.
“The suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the statement said.
Mr. Ukandu also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya, assured the public that the command remains committed to maintaining peace, law, and order across the state.
He explained that Ms. Uche-Anya made the assurance while briefing senior officers on the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
The Commissioner urged police officers to remain professional, accountable, and to avoid meddling in civil disputes.
“CP Uche-Anya directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Team Commanders to intensify efforts in curbing criminal activities as the festive season approaches,” the statement read.
While reaffirming the command’s commitment to professionalism, the Commissioner also urged members of the public to report any act of misconduct by officers.
