Governor Alex Otti has announced that Abia State will host the 63rd meeting of the Nigeria National Committee of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) slated for November 2025 in Umuahia, the state capital.
Otti made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday, following a courtesy visit by a WAEC delegation led by Mrs. Mary Chima, the Council’s Abia State Branch Controller, who formally conveyed the news to the governor.
According to Mrs. Chima, the Nigeria National Committee is the highest policy-making body of WAEC in the country, comprising Commissioners of Education, Heads of WAEC Offices, and senior national officers responsible for shaping examination standards and educational policy nationwide.
Governor Otti described Abia’s selection as a great honour and an opportunity for the state to showcase the progress it has made in transforming its education sector.
“We are truly honoured by this choice. More importantly, we see this as an opportunity to showcase the progress we are making and to strengthen our collaboration with key stakeholders in the education sector,” he said.
The governor highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to overhaul its educational infrastructure, including the renovation and reconstruction of schools, curriculum strengthening, and large-scale teacher recruitment.
“Our schools are undergoing renovation, and some are undergoing total reconstruction. We have also made substantial progress in improving teacher quality, strengthening our curriculum, and we are recruiting an additional 5,000 qualified teachers,” Otti noted.
Expressing confidence in the state’s preparedness, he added: “Now, with thousands of new teachers set to join our classrooms and major upgrades underway across our schools, we are proud to say: Abia is ready.”
Governor Otti commended WAEC for choosing Abia as host and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, discipline, integrity, and innovation across all levels of education in the state.
