The Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Hon. Shedrack Azubuike, on Wednesday, stopped the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, from holding a political rally in the area.
It was gathered that the rally, which was to take place at St. Augustine Primary School, Umunze, during school hours, violated existing rules prohibiting the use of public or private school premises for campaigns or social events while classes are in session.
Members of Ukachukwu’s campaign team were reportedly setting up canopies at the venue when the council chairman arrived and ordered the immediate dismantling of the structures. He also directed the organizers to vacate the premises, citing failure to obtain the necessary clearance from the local government authorities.
Speaking to journalists, Azubuike said the enforcement followed a directive issued on August 14, 2025, which bans political, religious, and social gatherings in schools across the state during school hours.
According to him, “The noise and disruption from such gatherings interfere with teaching and learning. The Anambra State Ministry of Education, in August 2025, issued a circular titled ‘Restriction on Political, Religious and Social Gatherings in Schools During School Hours’.
“This enforcement is not targeted at any group. It is to maintain peace, order, and public safety in line with our council’s regulations. Any group or individual seeking to use a school facility must first obtain written clearance,” he stated.
The chairman further warned that school heads and proprietors who fail to enforce the directive would face administrative or legal sanctions, reiterating his commitment to ensuring that all public gatherings in Orumba South comply with established safety and administrative standards.
