The United States President, Donald Trump, has designated Nigeria a Country of Special Concern over what he described as “senseless attacks and killings of Christians.”
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump condemned the atrocities and vowed that the United States would defend Christians across the globe.
“The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world!” Trump declared.
Although he did not specify the nature of America’s planned intervention, the statement is being viewed in diplomatic circles as a strong message of solidarity with victims of religious persecution.
Christian communities in Northern Nigeria, particularly in Plateau and Benue states, have suffered repeated attacks by Islamic extremists and armed bandits. Despite mounting evidence and public outcry, the Federal Government continues to insist that the violence is not targeted at Christians alone.
