Operatives of the Ebonyi State Police Command have killed two suspected gunmen and foiled a kidnap attempt in separate operations across the state.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, saying the suspects were neutralised during a gun duel with operatives at their hideout in Iyonu community, Ishielu Local Government Area.
He said the operation, carried out within the Iyonu/Idodo forest, followed credible intelligence on the gang’s activities in the area. Upon sighting the police team, the hoodlums reportedly opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange that left two of them dead.
Recovered from the scene were an AK-47 rifle, two locally fabricated Dane guns, 20 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and five live cartridges.
In a separate operation, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit foiled an attempt to abduct the mother of a prominent individual in Isata community, Isu, Onicha Local Government Area.
Three suspects — Monday Okorie, Ngwuta Friday, and Simon Joshua — were arrested, while one escaped. A locally made single-barrel gun was also recovered from them.
Ukandu said the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
Commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, commended the operatives for their bravery and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the state.
She urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support police efforts in sustaining peace and security across Ebonyi State.
