The people of Uburu, in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, have thrown their weight behind the ongoing expansion of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) located in the community.
In a communiqué signed by community leaders — HRH Eze (Dr.) Lazarus Umahi Nweze, Chief Shedrack Onu, and Chief Odi Nicholas Enyi — the people of Uburu said the land acquisition for the university’s expansion was a collective decision, fully endorsed by the Uburu Traditional Rulers Council.
The leaders exonerated the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, of allegations of land grabbing in the expansion process, describing the accusations as unfounded and politically motivated. They condemned the use of the community’s name in a petition purportedly submitted against the minister, warning those behind it to desist from misrepresenting Uburu.
“The expansion of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) is a collective initiative of Ndi Uburu, conceived and endorsed by the Uburu Traditional Council,” the communiqué stated.
“The council, chaired by HRH Eze (Dr.) Lazarus Umahi Nweze, hereby fully exonerates Sen. Umahi of all allegations regarding the land acquisition process.”
The community further explained that the DUFUHS Land Expansion Committee — chaired by Dr. Umezurike Daniel with Mr. Odi Nicholas Enyi as secretary — conducted a transparent and inclusive process in response to a formal request from the university’s governing council for additional land, as the institution currently occupies less than 20 hectares.
According to the committee, its terms of reference included carrying out community-wide sensitization, identifying and engaging affected landowners, obtaining written consent and signatures, and ensuring full compensation for all verified landowners.
“All these steps were duly followed,” the communiqué noted.
“A total of 29 identified landowners received compensation and gave written consent. At no point did Senator Umahi or any government official engage in land grabbing, intimidation, or threats.”
The community leaders condemned attempts by a few individuals to use the name of Umuchima village to create division and tarnish Senator Umahi’s reputation.
They reaffirmed their unwavering support for the DUFUHS expansion, describing it as a vital community-driven project that has brought pride, employment, and sustainable development to Uburu.
