The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday commenced a public hearing on the amendment of its constitution for the South-East zone in Enugu.
According to the organisers, the exercise is aimed at strengthening internal democracy and, among other goals, increasing women’s representation in party politics. The hearing is also designed to gather input from stakeholders on proposed amendments.
Chairman of the South-East Constitution Review Committee, Princess Miriam Onuoha, said the review seeks to promote gender inclusivity and diversity within Nigeria’s political system. She added that the APC intends to expand its internal structure to admit more members and allow new entrants to contest positions without unnecessary delays.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Chidiebere Onyia, stressed the importance of inclusivity and urged participants to contribute meaningfully to shaping a stronger and more democratic party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He noted that similar zonal hearings have been held in other regions, including the South-South, where about 100 memoranda were submitted. Mbah commended the Chairman of the APC Constitution Amendment Committee, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, for providing leadership to the process.
The public hearing is focused on issues such as zoning, representation, membership growth, transparency, and the integration of youths and women into leadership structures.
APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Eneukwu, described the constitution review as the cornerstone of internal democracy, stressing the need for inclusivity and broader representation. The National Vice Chairman, Mr. Victor Giadom, also said the amendment was necessary to address existing gaps and create a more functional and transparent framework.
Participants, including government officials, traditional rulers, NGOs, and civil society groups, deliberated on proposals such as rotational presidency, reserved legislative seats for women, and greater autonomy for local governments.
One of the proposed amendments includes creating permanent roles in the National Executive Committee (NEC) for former governors, Senate Presidents, Speakers of the House of Representatives, and former National Chairmen of the party.
