President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday postponed his scheduled trips to South Africa and Angola to receive additional security briefings on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.
A statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President was earlier due to depart Abuja for Johannesburg to attend the 20th G20 Summit, and thereafter proceed to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit. The trips have now been put on hold following fresh security concerns.
According to the statement, Tinubu has directed the military and police to deploy more personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, in response to a request from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. He also instructed the police to pursue and apprehend the bandits who attacked the Christ Apostolic Church in the town.
The President is awaiting reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on his behalf, as well as updates from the police and the Department of State Services on the Kwara attack.
The statement further said Tinubu reiterated his directive to security agencies to intensify efforts toward rescuing the 24 abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi State and ensuring their safe return.
