Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Sunday morning, visited the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, Sokoto State.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma.
According to the statement, Governor Otti encouraged Kanu to remain strong, assuring him that the engagements initiated over two years ago—of which Kanu was aware—had been intensified despite recent developments.
“The Governor enjoined Kanu to remain calm but strong, assuring that the issue will be resolved administratively and that he, Mazi Kanu, will regain his freedom,” the statement read.
Ekeoma added that Governor Otti expressed delight that the Sultan of Sokoto shared his view on the need for Kanu’s release and the de-escalation of tension. He noted that the Sultan jokingly told the Governor that Kanu had become his subject and that he would turban him, a remark that made the IPOB leader laugh heartily.
Kanu, who was said to be in high spirits during the visit, commended Governor Otti for the developmental strides of his administration.
“Mazi Kanu, beaming with smiles, thanked Governor Otti for the visit and said he was not surprised because the Governor had done the same in the past,” the statement continued.
“He told the Governor that he is proud of his giant strides in Abia, based on the feedback he receives from home. He likened Otti’s achievements to those of the Late Dee Sam Mbakwe as Governor of old Imo State—efforts that have kept him permanently immortalised—and urged the Governor to continue serving the people diligently.”
The IPOB leader further stated that his primary interest is good governance and any effort that improves the welfare of the people. He prayed for God’s guidance upon the Governor and his team as they continue to serve the state.
Governor Otti was accompanied on the visit by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma; and some top Sokoto State government officials, including commissioners and advisers.
Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, was also present during the visit.
