Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Anambra State have urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to strengthen the State Disability Commission and fully enforce the Disability Rights Law to enhance inclusion and equal participation in society.
The appeal was made during the 2025 End-of-Year Meeting and Praise Day of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Anambra State chapter, held at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Amawbia.
In his opening remarks, JONAPWD State Chairman, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, lamented that despite existing laws, many members of the disability community still face systemic barriers that hinder their full involvement in public life.
“We continue to encounter real challenges such as inaccessible public buildings, transportation systems, schools, and healthcare facilities. Qualified persons with disabilities also struggle to secure employment in the private sector,” he said.
Okeke called on the state government to prioritise accessibility in public infrastructure, strengthen the capacity of the Disability Commission, and expand livelihood and employment programmes for PWDs. He also urged religious institutions to adopt more inclusive practices and help combat stigma within communities.
He appealed to schools to implement inclusive learning systems and to healthcare providers to improve access, rehabilitation services, and early interventions for children with disabilities.
While noting that Anambra has made notable progress compared to many states, Okeke commended Governor Soludo on his re-election and acknowledged his administration’s efforts toward improving disability inclusion.
The JONAPWD chairman also expressed gratitude to the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for extending economic empowerment support to 250 PWDs in the state, describing it as a boost to their financial independence.
“This gesture, delivered through the wife of our Governor, Her Excellency Dr. Nonye Soludo, is a strong statement of commitment to the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Nigeria,” he said.
He encouraged beneficiaries to use the empowerment funds wisely and assured those not yet included that future programmes would accommodate more participants.
Okeke also appreciated the contributions of Naira Rice Limited, EmeNet International Ltd., the Ministry of Health, private donors, and members of the disability community for supporting the event. He urged association members to remain united, develop their skills, and take advantage of emerging opportunities.
During the meeting, participants raised concerns and made recommendations, including increased involvement in sports and other state activities to foster unity and improve wellbeing.
Okeke assured members that their observations would be considered and reiterated the need for continued cooperation for the growth of the association.
The event featured a health talk by Dr. Chinyere Onubogu, along with worship and interactive sessions involving teams from the Nigerian Red Cross and Access Bank.
