Secretary to the Abia State Government (SSG), Professor Kenneth Kalu, has received the approval of Governor Alex Otti to embark on a leave of absence to attend to pressing domestic matters requiring his physical presence in Canada.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma.
According to the statement, Governor Otti announced the development during the State Executive Council meeting held on Monday, December 8, 2025.
The Governor was quoted as explaining that, given the enormity of responsibilities associated with the SSG’s office, it was not feasible for Prof. Kalu to work remotely. He thanked the outgoing SSG for his exemplary service to the state and wished him well as he commences his leave.
The statement also noted that Prof. Kalu, while addressing the Council, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Otti for the opportunity to serve in an administration “that has made Abians proud.”
He assured his colleagues that he would continue to contribute to the development of the state from a distance.
“Growing up, I had a vision of living a very simple and private life with a modest ambition, but looking at what I have accomplished in my life, I can only thank God for His grace,” Prof. Kalu said.
“Above all, having the opportunity to serve in a government that has wiped the tears of Abia people and made them proud was a dream come true. Hence, my gratitude to Governor Otti for his support.”
Before his appointment as SSG, Prof. Kalu was a senior academic in Canada. He reportedly took a leave of absence from his university position to join Governor Otti’s campaign and was subsequently appointed SSG following the Governor’s electoral victory.
Professor Kalu, an accomplished chartered accountant, hails from Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.
