The Ebonyi State Government has distributed relief materials to more than 150 students affected by the collapse of the privately owned Pentagon Hostel at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI). The building collapsed in July.
The Commissioner for Human Capital Development, Ann Aligwe, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Henry Nworie, led the distribution exercise held at the university’s Senate Chambers in Ikwo Local Government Area.
Nworie said the intervention was approved by Governor Francis Nwifuru to cushion the hardship faced by the displaced students.
“We have brought 150 mattresses, 150 cartons of noodles, 150 bags of rice, soaps and other toiletries. His Excellency, the Governor, approved funds for these items earlier, and procurement was done immediately. Distribution was delayed because the students were on holiday,” he explained.
He urged the students to remain law-abiding and peaceful to continue attracting government support.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Joshua Nwafor, commended the Governor for the timely intervention, noting that the State Government had earlier relocated the affected students to alternative hostels within the university.
Receiving the materials, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Charles Okolie, expressed appreciation for the Governor’s consistent support to the institution and its students.
Similarly, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Mobilisation, Angel Odono, encouraged the students to reciprocate the gesture by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards and supporting the Governor’s re-election bid.
The SUG President, Nwankwo Ibere Kelvin, and a beneficiary, Ojiego Chimamanda, also thanked Governor Nwifuru for assisting the students during a difficult period.
