A pressure group in the Enugu North Senatorial Zone, the Nsukka Asadu Initiative, has called on residents of the zone to embrace unity in the collective interest of the people.
The call was made on Tuesday in Enugu at the end of the group’s enlarged meeting, where several issues, including the state of unity and development in the zone, were extensively discussed.
In a statement jointly signed by its Coordinator, Mr. Chinweike Ugwuoke, and Secretary, Mr. Mark Eze, the Initiative said unity had become crucial for the socio-economic progress and well-being of the region.
“We urge our people to unite for progress because united we stand, divided we fall. The more united we are, the better for our senatorial zone. Our unity is our strength,” the group said.
The group also reviewed ongoing developments in the zone and noted that infrastructural progress remained insufficient. It urged the Enugu State Government and the chairmen of the six local government areas in the zone to intensify efforts, particularly in opening up rural communities.
“Our rural communities are suffering from a lack of access roads, which is affecting the local economy. These communities are agrarian; they need motorable roads to convey their farm produce to the markets,” the group added.
The Initiative further expressed concern over rising insecurity in the zone, citing persistent cases of kidnapping and abduction despite government efforts to curb the trend.
“We appeal to relevant authorities, including security agencies, to focus more attention on the Enugu North Senatorial Zone, especially as the yuletide season approaches, so that our people can enjoy Christmas like others across the state,” it said.
Describing Enugu North as a strategic gateway to Northern Nigeria, the group stressed the need for strengthened and fortified security to safeguard lives and property.
The Initiative wished the people of the zone a peaceful and safe Christmas celebration.
