Bayelsa State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who died on Thursday after collapsing during official duties at the Government House, Yenagoa.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., prompting immediate emergency response. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was first taken to the emergency unit before being moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Medical efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
His unexpected passing has shocked residents and government officials, given that he was actively engaged in state matters earlier in the day.
PDP reacts, says death an “inexplicable loss”
Meanwhile the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in an official press release, expressed profound grief over the Deputy Governor’s death, describing it as an “inexplicable loss” and a source of “indescribable pain.”
According to the statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobo, the party received the news of his passing “with deep shock,” noting that Senator Ewhrudjakpo was a trusted and faithful party man whose contributions were invaluable. The release added that the National Working Committee and the party’s membership nationwide, particularly in Bayelsa State, were deeply pained by the development.
The PDP praised the late Deputy Governor as “an honest and consistent politician” who practiced politics with principle and conviction—qualities the party said he upheld until his final moments. It further described him as “a hero of political integrity” and prayed for the repose of his soul.
The party also extended condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State, acknowledging the tragic event as a painful and irreparable loss.
