Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has denied reports claiming that he specified which region of the country should produce the president in the 2027 general election, describing the reports as fake and misleading.
In a rebuttal issued on Monday, El-Rufai said the allegation, which has been widely circulated on social media, was entirely untrue and falsely attributed to him.
“My attention has been drawn to a trending fake news item alleging that I specified which region of the country should produce the president in 2027. This is an untrue claim, despite its virality,” he said.
The former governor stressed that he never made such comments in any of his speeches, interviews, or social media posts, adding that the deliberate attribution of false claims to him should not be taken seriously.
El-Rufai also expressed concern over what he described as a failure of professional responsibility by some senior media practitioners who published the report without proper verification.
“I am concerned that even some senior media professionals failed in their responsibility to verify information before publication. Such lapses damage public trust and weaken our society,” he stated.
He urged the media and the public to rely only on his official social media platforms or verified interviews with reputable media organisations for his views, warning against the growing misuse of social media to spread misinformation.
“These caveats are crucial as we confront both irresponsible politicking and the deliberate misuse of social media for spreading fake news,” El-Rufai said.
He concluded by calling on political actors and the general public to act responsibly, noting that Nigerians deserve better than misinformation and divisive political narratives.
