Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, is dead.
He died at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the former head of the judiciary, describing him as a man of integrity with a steadfast commitment to the rule of law.
In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Mukhtar Gidado, the governor said Justice Muhammad was a venerable jurist whose life and career exemplified dedication to duty and integrity in public service.
“Justice Tanko was a venerable jurist whose life and career exemplified dedication to duty, integrity in service, and a steadfast commitment to the rule of law. He rose through the legal profession with diligence and distinction, serving with honour as a judge,” the statement read.
Governor Mohammed noted that the late CJN embodied the qualities of a patriotic Nigerian committed to the advancement of the nation, adding that his death was a major loss to the country.
“His passing is a significant loss not only to Bauchi State but to the Nigerian judiciary and the rule of law,” the governor said.
The governor extended his condolences to the family of the late CJN, his colleagues in the legal profession, and Nigerians at large.
Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad rose through the ranks of the judiciary, serving at the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He was appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2019 and served until 2022, following the exit of his predecessor, Justice Walter Onnoghen.
