Joy in Abia as Okonjo-Iweala unveils electric buses for urban transit

    EditorBy EditorDecember 23, 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

    Stephen Ukandu, Umuahia

There was jubilation in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, unveiled 20 electric buses introduced by Governor Alex Otti for urban mass transit.

At the unveiling ceremony at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Okonjo-Iweala commended Governor Otti for the environmentally friendly initiative, describing it as a practical response to pollution and climate change.

She said the project marked an extraordinary step for Abia State and expressed hope that it would continue to grow from strength to strength.

Governor Otti said the initiative symbolised Abia’s journey into the future, explaining that although the state initially considered compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, it opted for electric vehicles because of their zero emissions.

He disclosed that the 20 buses are compliant with the needs of persons with disabilities and can travel between 400 and 450 kilometres on a full charge. He added that while the charging stations meant to accompany the buses were delayed due to a maritime accident, alternative stations had been installed at the ICC, with plans to extend them to Aba, Ohafia and other locations, including access for private electric vehicle owners.

The governor said the buses would further reduce transportation costs in the state and announced free rides for citizens from commencement until sometime in January. He noted that the buses would operate morning, afternoon and evening, urging commuters to observe order and give priority to persons with disabilities.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, described the project as a product of Governor Otti’s forward-thinking agenda, aimed at innovation, sustainability and inclusive development. He said the initiative marked a deliberate shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energy solutions.

Also speaking, Chairman of Coscharis Group, manufacturers of the buses, Dr Cosmas Maduka, said Abia State was the first in Nigeria to launch electric buses. He praised Governor Otti for insisting on electric vehicles, noting that the buses offer safety features, comfort and modern technology.

He expressed hope that other states would emulate Abia’s example.
