Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State and Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, on Friday paid a New Year courtesy visit to Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti.
Speaking to journalists during the visit, Governor Uzodimma said the meeting was not political but a friendly engagement in the spirit of the New Year festivities.
According to him, governors of the South-East are determined to work together for the development of the region, irrespective of their political affiliations.
He said, “My visit is a courtesy call on the Governor, whom I have also seen is doing very well.
“I wished him a happy New Year and prayed with him that Almighty God will give us the strength to continue to serve our people better and better. That is why I am here,” Uzodimma stated.
The Imo State Governor added that collaboration remains the only viable path to regional development.
“We in the South-East are determined to develop the region, and the only way to do that is through collaboration.
“As Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, I have a responsibility to touch base with my colleagues, discuss with them, share ideas, and agree on how best to help our people to thrive.
“The five of us, governors of the South-East, have decided to ensure that the South-East remains an integral part of Nigeria, and that is what we are working towards,” he assured.
Governor Uzodinma, who also serves as the Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in the South-East and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, commended Governor Otti for what he described as quality governance in Abia State.
Responding, Governor Otti thanked his guest for the visit, stressing that it was not politically motivated.
“This is not necessarily a political visit, but because we are all politicians, there is no way politics will not come up.
“However, what is most important is the understanding that government is one — the federal, sub-national, and local governments. You cannot be in opposition to a government of which you are a part.
“When people mistake differences in political parties for opposition, they miss the point. You can disagree, and there are forums for that, but once a decision is taken, you become part and parcel of it,” Otti said.
The Abia State Governor reaffirmed that the state government is part of the Federal Government, explaining that Governor Uzodimma’s visit was simply to extend New Year goodwill, which he said he deeply appreciated.
Governor Uzodimma was accompanied by former Imo State Governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, among others. Also present were the Abia State Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, and members of the state executive council.
