The political struggle between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his estranged godson and current governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, appears to have been externalized as Wike has issued a stern warning to the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Bashiru, urging him to steer clear of political affairs in Rivers State.
Wike’s reaction followed Bashiru’s public criticism of the APC South-South Vice Chairman, Hon. Victor Giadom, who had described Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as a “so-called governor” during Wike’s recent thank-you visit to Gokana Local Government Area.
In a Facebook post, Bashiru faulted Giadom’s remarks, labeling them disrespectful to the office of a sitting governor and unbecoming of a party official. He stressed that political disagreements should not diminish respect for elected offices.
Speaking at a rally in Oyigbo, Wike fired back, warning Bashiru against what he described as unwarranted interference. He also threatened to escalate the issue to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola.
“Do not take our support for President Tinubu for granted. Be careful with statements concerning Rivers State. When the President returns, I will ensure the Minister of Blue Economy is properly briefed on what has transpired. Anyone who interferes in Rivers politics will regret it,” Wike said.
He further cautioned against unnecessary commentary on Rivers State, insisting that the state would not tolerate external meddling and declaring it a “no-go area” for those who cross the line.
