The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has rejected moves by members of the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the development as “untenable.”
The party warned those behind the impeachment plot against actions capable of destabilising the state government.
The warning came hours after the Rivers State House of Assembly formally initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.
Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, had described the governor as a “mistake,” accusing him of acts of gross misconduct.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the Rivers APC said it would not allow the strife that characterised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) era to resurface now that the governor has joined the APC.
The statement read in part: “The attention of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has been drawn to the latest unfortunate developments emanating from the chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“We concede that the legislature is an independent arm of government and that its constitutional responsibilities of checks and balances fall within its democratic purview.
“However, our position at this time is that we solemnly reject any resort to an impeachment process against our governor and his deputy.
“It would be totally untenable for our party to remain silent while an obvious hangover from the strife that characterised the PDP era is allowed to resurface in our great party.
“It is important to remind the people of Rivers State and Nigerians that since the latest threat of impeachment centres on the budget, during the period of emergency rule, a budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President and Commander-in-Chief in May 2025.
“The budget was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and subsequently by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025, for a total sum of ₦1.485 trillion.
“This budget is for one year and is expected to run until August 2026. If the governor is comfortable with its composition, he may elect not to present a supplementary budget. Besides, the Constitution allows a six-month spending window into the new fiscal year by a state governor.
“We therefore strongly advise all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, especially APC members, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the Rivers State Government ably led by His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.
“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the APC-led government in Rivers State is not destabilised through fratricidal disagreements.
“We call on members of the State Assembly, particularly APC lawmakers, to immediately discontinue the impeachment process in order not to drag the image of our great party into the mud and stifle the continuous progress and development of Rivers State.
“Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy.”
