The Abia Patriots (TAP) have commended Governor Alex Otti for announcing plans to transition Abia State to renewable energy through the utilisation of organic waste.
Governor Otti had, during a media parley last week, disclosed that the state had concluded plans to venture into renewable energy generation.
In a statement issued on Monday, TAP urged the state government to fast-track the implementation of the initiative, citing its immense benefits to the state’s economy and environment.
Describing the plan as “a beacon of hope for Abia’s energy future,” the Secretary-General of TAP, Mazi Adindu Madumere, said the conversion of organic waste to biogas would significantly reduce pollution, improve public health, and stimulate economic growth.
“By converting organic waste to biogas, we will reduce environmental pollution, improve public health, and boost economic activities across the state,” Madumere said.
He noted that the initiative would reduce Abia’s dependence on the unstable national grid, spare residents from frequent power outages, and position the state as a model for sustainable development in Nigeria.
Madumere further urged the state government to move swiftly in implementing the plan to guarantee energy security and a healthier environment for residents, adding that the Abia Patriots were ready to support the initiative to ensure its successful execution.
Meanwhile, the Abia State Government had late last year acquired power distribution rights across the state from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). The acquisition, which is at its final stage, is expected to take effect in the first quarter of 2026.
