African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, and former Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over reported plans to power the Presidential Villa with solar energy, describing the move as troubling amid Nigeria’s lingering electricity crisis.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Monday, Obi recalled a campaign promise attributed to Tinubu in which he said: “If I do not provide steady electricity in four years, do not vote for me for a second tenure.”
Obi noted that 32 months into the administration, many Nigerians were still contending with unstable power supply. He argued that the reported decision to disconnect the Aso Rock Presidential Villa from the national grid raises questions about the government’s commitment to revitalising the country’s electricity infrastructure.
He referenced provisions in the 2025 budget allocating ₦10 billion for solar power at the Presidential Villa, as well as additional funds in the proposed 2026 budget for upgrades and maintenance. According to him, indications that the Villa would rely entirely on solar power suggest a lack of confidence in a national grid “that has been performing abysmally.”
Describing the development as “gross neglect” and “deeply worrisome,” Obi maintained that government institutions should lead efforts to strengthen and expand the national grid rather than opt out of it.
“One would expect government institutions to lead efforts to strengthen and expand the grid so that other establishments, and ultimately, citizens can benefit. If those in authority disconnect themselves from the system, who then will connect the ordinary Nigerian to reliable power?” he stated.
While acknowledging that renewable energy promotion is commendable and necessary, Obi stressed that leadership must demonstrate accountability and empathy, especially when electoral promises remain unmet.
He added that although Nigerians may not expect 100 per cent fulfilment of campaign pledges, they do expect “100 per cent effort, measurable improvements and clear explanations when gaps exist.”
