President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, bringing to an abrupt end his controversial tenure as the head of the Nigeria Police Force.
In a swift move, the President approved the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police.
The development was confirmed in a statement personally signed by President Tinubu on Tuesday, which said the decision was part of ongoing efforts to reposition the police for greater efficiency, professionalism and intelligence-driven operations amid prevailing security challenges. While the circumstances surrounding Egbetokun’s resignation were not fully disclosed, reliable sources said he was forced out by the President.
President Tinubu, however, commended Egbetokun for his service to the nation and wished him well in his future endeavours. He also charged the new police boss to consolidate reforms and strengthen internal security across the country.
Tunji Disu
Disu is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and previously headed the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force — a strategic unit once led by Abba Kyari.
He also served as Principal Staff Officer to the then-Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, where he was involved in high-level administrative and operational coordination.
Academically, Disu is a graduate of English Education from Lagos State University. He holds two master’s degrees: one in Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State, and another in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University.
On February 6, 2026, AIG Disu assumed duty to succeed Margaret Ochalla at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos State.
