The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has praised Senator Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West in the National Assembly, for instituting a robust scholarship programme aimed at empowering his constituents.
Akpabio gave the commendation during the launch of the 2025/2026 Scholarship Programme of Senator Osita Ngwu, held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Enugu.
The Senate President said the senator was shaping the future of youths by investing in their education, describing the initiative as a worthy investment.
He announced a personal donation of N100 million to support the educational and empowerment initiatives of Senator Ngwu.
Akpabio also challenged beneficiaries of the Enugu West Academy (EWA) to pay the gesture forward, citing the story of a pilot he once trained who later flew him on a commercial flight.
“To the students here, by the time you graduate and become successful in society, try to take one person and train them.
“Let us multiply this goodness so that Nigeria will be better,” Akpabio said.
Speaking at the event, Senator Ngwu said he remained committed to the educational advancement of young people, adding that the future of Enugu West Senatorial District would be defined by “knowledge, opportunity and deliberate investment in young people.”
The senator said education remained the key to unlocking the potential of youths in the zone.
“I believe that education should be accessible to every child regardless of their background or circumstances,” he said.
Ngwu highlighted the achievements of the Enugu West Academy (EWA), which he established to provide free UTME preparation classes and registration for students across the five local government areas of Enugu West.
According to him, the academy provided support to over 2,600 students in 2025 alone.
“The academy currently has over 4,000 students across 19 physical learning centres and online classes, supported by more than 175 dedicated teachers,” he said.
Ngwu expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah for approving the use of public facilities for the learning centres, noting that the people of Enugu West remained grateful for his support.
He also thanked the Bishop of Nike Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Christian Onyia, for his assistance in helping the academy achieve its goals.
Also speaking, the Enugu State Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, who represented Governor Peter Mbah, emphasised the importance of education and skills development for young people.
He commended the governor’s initiatives, including the programme that provides free UTME preparation and registration for students, as well as the Women Empowerment Programme aimed at boosting women-led businesses and promoting financial inclusion.
Meanwhile, some constituents thanked the senator for creating opportunities for young people in the constituency.
They described the scholarship programme as a major relief for parents and guardians and a way of keeping youths positively engaged.
