The Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, has warned that any lecturer caught selling textbooks directly to students will face disciplinary action.
Awuzie gave the warning in her office when executive members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), led by its president, Comrade Anuluonye Ifechukwu Joseph, paid her a courtesy visit.
She reiterated that the only approved channel for the sale of textbooks in the institution is the polytechnic’s bookshop, stressing that lecturers who bypass it will be sanctioned.
The Rector noted that she had yet to receive any formal petition on the direct sale of textbooks by lecturers but assured that any such complaint would be treated with urgency.
She also abolished the appointment of course representatives by lecturers for the purpose of selling textbooks, warning that any student who parades himself as a course rep for that purpose would face disciplinary measures.
According to her, only class representatives are recognised in departments, adding that any class rep found extorting fellow students would also be sanctioned.
Earlier, the SUG president, Comrade Anuluonye Ifechukwu Joseph, commended the Rector for her support to the union and highlighted challenges facing students, calling for her intervention.
Responding, Awuzie said she would personally supervise ongoing work at the students’ recreation centre at the institution’s permanent site. She disclosed that the facility has over 20 conveniences, while newly renovated ones at the administrative block would soon be opened for use.
She further assured that issues of electricity in some departments at the permanent site, as well as delays in uploading students’ results, processing clearances, among others, would be addressed.
In his remarks, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha, thanked the Rector and the management for their continued support to students, particularly the gifts and scholarships awarded during the February 14 St. Valentine’s celebration.
Asomugha also praised the Rector for her non-interference in student union elections and her sustained commitment to students’ welfare.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of a gold award to the Rector by the students in recognition of her leadership and commitment to the growth and development of the institution.
