Team Abia delivered a commanding performance at the maiden National Teqball League, clinching top honours as the historic tournament—tagged “Aba 2026”—drew to a close in Abia State.
Kahleed Yahaya and Funsho Sampson emerged champions in the men’s singles and men’s doubles events, respectively, sealing a memorable outing for the host state.
Team Rivers also made a strong statement, with Musa Joshua and Gladys Abasi claiming titles in the women’s singles and mixed doubles categories, while Team Delta topped the table in the women’s doubles event.
The landmark competition, sponsored by the Abia State Government, was held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Aba Sports Club and attracted participants from 18 states across the federation.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustained investment in sports development.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Pastor Mrs Jane Igwe, the commissioner praised Governor Alex Otti for his consistent support for sporting activities in the state.
“We have a sports-loving governor who continues to back initiatives that engage our youths positively,” he said.
“Virtually every month, Abia hosts a major sporting event. This is a clear demonstration of commitment.”
He commended athletes, coaches and officials for their roles in the success of the competition.
On his part, President of the Nigeria Teqball Federation, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, said plans are underway to elevate the tournament into an international event in subsequent editions.
Represented by the Federation’s Vice President and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Ndudi Edede, Gumel disclosed that the inaugural edition exceeded expectations, with participation from 18 states.
“This is just the beginning. In future editions, we aim to attract more states and even countries,” he said.
He explained that Abia was selected as host due to its improving security profile and the state government’s demonstrated commitment to sports development.
“Abia today stands out as one of the safest states, with a governor who is focused and result-driven. That is why we brought this event here,” he added.
Edede further revealed that the state had already received commendation from the International Teqball Federation, becoming the first in Nigeria to earn such recognition.
Also speaking, the South-East representative on the board of the Teqball Federation of Nigeria, Barr. Victoria Nlemigbo, described the tournament as more than just a competition.
“It showcased skill, resilience and unity across Nigeria. The level of support from the Abia State Government is unprecedented and worthy of emulation,” she said.
One of the standout performers, gold medallist Funso Saliu of Team Abia, expressed excitement over his victory and set his sights on competing internationally.
“This is a dream come true for me. My next goal is to take my career beyond Nigeria and compete on the global stage,” he said.
The successful hosting of the maiden National Teqball League marks another milestone in Abia’s growing reputation as an emerging hub for sports development in Nigeria.
