The Imo State Council of Elders on Sunday, condemned the bloodletting in Igboland saying that such a thing is alien to their people in Imo State, South-East region and Nigeria at large.
The Obi of Obinugwu, and Chairman of the Council, HRM, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, stated this on Sunday after he received a delegation from the International Republican Institute and Impact Development Organization.
To resolve the issue, he advised Nigerians to embrace peace and love for one another.
He also called for reform in the economic and political system of the country.
According to Ilomuanya, “there is a need for Nigerians to embrace peace, and love for one another if the country is to restore the ideals of her founding fathers and get things right. He added: “There is no alternative to peace if the country must make further socioeconomic, and political progress.
“Our problem is that people seem not to understand the important benefits of peace. Certain attitudes especially the issue of bloodletting are alien to our culture. Such unfortunate acts can be attributed to the loss of moral, ethical and cultural values.
“As a panacea, we call for moral, and attitudinal orientation of the youths. We are assuring the delegation from the Institute of the Council’s cooperation, and support in its peace advocacy mission in Imo State.
“The Council will partner with the Institute to ensure it succeeds in its mandate. The prevalence of peace in any society should be everyone’s concern. We want to announce the immediate appointment of the leader of the delegation, who is also a member of the Council, Engr(Amb) Peter Ohagwa as a member of the Council’s Peace and Reconciliation Committee.”
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Ambassador Peter Ohagwa, said “the Institute’s core mandate is to ensure that peace reigns in the country. The Institute is an international body committed to ensuring that peace and harmony are embraced in the country irrespective of the differences in religion, tribe or political affiliations.”
