The Governorship candidate of Labour Party (LP), for Enugu State Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, has raised the alarm over alleged proliferation of arms in the state ahead of Saturday March 18, Governorship and State Assembly elections.
While addressing the Students of University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Edeoga said it has become necessary to tell the world what is happening in the state before the elections.
He pointed accusing fingers on disgruntled politicians who felt their positions were being threatened and some highly placed government officials.
He said: “A few days ago heavily armed thugs were apprehended by Nigerian Soldiers in Igboeze North Local Government Area; a few days ago another heavily armed thugs were apprehended by Nigerian Soldiers in Isi Uzo LGA Governor’s Lodge and as I speak they are undergoing investigation in Enugu.
“These criminals have penetrated into our communities, in Uzouwani LGA, the chairman in connivance with his brother have procured armed thugs and lodged them in several locations but the army and police are on their trail.
“I am not trying to scare you but I am just telling you what is going on, the chairmen of various LGAs were commissioned to carryout these atrocities but the Nigerian Army and other security agencies are equal to the task,” he said.
The LP candidate assured the UNN community that his government if elected, would be consultative.
“I will consult with you from time to time both students and staff,” he said.
He also promised to do anything possible to reconstruct roads, drainage and hostels in the university, despite it being a federal university.
“UNN, not minding the fact that it is a federal university, it will receive our attention.
“If we can save the Zik’s flat the way it is now, if I become the governor, I promise you, I will commit to that project,” he said.
He enjoined the students to desist from being used for violence and thuggery and come out en masse to vote for Labour Party.
